Kenya Kabaddi National League defending champions Kenya Police Service (KPS) head coach Amos Kagiri has insisted on the need to further develop Kabaddi in the country.
The tactician noted that the country had the potential to excel in the sport as well and shine during international competitions.
Speaking from Kagio Primary School Mutithi, Mwea, Kirinyaga County after the conclusion of the Kirinyaga Open Championships, the jovial Kagiri noted that there was a need to start a hype around the sport and create interest among women so that they can also join the sport.
"We have won all our games both in the circle and rectangle styles, but of most importance is how our women's team has developed over time meaning that when we now have both genders doing well then we can start dreaming of international accolades. We are also working on plans to recruit younger players who will form a youth side to feed the senior team," he told Mozzart Sport.
The coach led his side to defend their prestigious title after winning the second edition of the Kirinyaga Open Championships played last weekend.
His men's charges registered stunning victories against rivals Kenya Prisons Service, Marurui, and home team Kirinyaga while his counterpart and assistant Owen Dido inspired the women's team to wins over defending champions Administration Police (AP), National Youth Service (NYS) and hosts Kirinyaga to claim the top honors in the category.
Eight men's teams honored this fixture led by Administration Police, Kenya police, NYS, Prisons, Marurui, Utawala Star, Paradiso, and Kirinyaga while only four teams participated in the women's category had AP, NYS, KPS, and Kirinyaga.
Competitions manager Perpetual Muthoni added that there are plans to celebrate World Kabaddi Day on 23rd March this year, a warm-up for the next fixture which will be five days later on the 28th of the same month in the lakeside city.
